Quick start

Start your own group in 7 steps

Most local groups start with one person and a simple idea. Here's how to go from "someone should start…" to a group that meets face to face.

  1. 1I've got an ideaTell us what you'd love to start.
    • Keep it simple: a walk, a cuppa, a craft circle or a games night.
    • No experience needed. You're the person who gets people together, not the expert.
  2. 2Does it already exist?Search Hooroo and see what's happening nearby.
    • If a similar group exists, you could join it or offer to help.
    • If nothing turns up, great, there's a gap to fill.
  3. 3Find my peoplePost an “Anyone interested?” shout-out.
    • Post a wish and neighbours can tap 👋 to show interest.
    • Look for one buddy to help you — running it with someone else makes it far more likely to last.
    • Once a few people are interested, you know it's worth starting.
  4. 4Find a placeBrowse community centres, halls, cafés, pubs, parks and other spaces.
    • Parks and cafés are free and easy for a first meetup.
    • City of Holdfast Bay also lists community spaces you can hire.
  5. 5Get what we needAsk the community → borrow → donate → micro-grant → buy.
    • People can offer “🎁 I can donate something” on your wish.
    • Check council community grants before spending your own money.
  6. 6Try it onceCreate your first meetup.
    • Pick one date, time and place, and keep it under 2 hours.
    • Tell people: your listing goes live on Hooroo, then share it in a local Facebook group.
    • Aim for a few friendly faces, not a crowd — three people is a real group.
    • Greet everyone as they arrive and learn their names — people come back for the welcome.
    • Add it to Hooroo so locals can find it.
  7. 7Keep it goingAsk “Should we do it again?” and invite people to help.
    • Set a regular time, like every second Tuesday.
    • Ask people what they enjoyed and change one small thing each time.
    • Share jobs around: someone brings snacks, someone sends reminders.
